After business analyst Taran Adarsh confirmed that Judwaa 2 was a superhit with its business in India having touched Rs 127.56 crore on week 3, I went back and read up a bit on the background of this movie.
Judwaa 2 (2017) is the remake of Judwaa (1997), which Dhawan himself had directed. It doesn’t end there. The 1997 film was a remake of the 1994 Telugu movie Hello Brother, which in turn was an unofficial remake of Jackie-Chan starrer Twin Dragons (1992).
It takes a David Dhawan to make crores out of a done-to-the-death plot like this one. Interestingly, Dhawan hasn’t had a particularly good run since his 2007 blockbuster Partner (a remake of the 2005 Will Smith film Hitch) starring Govinda and Salman Khan Since then, he has directed Do Knot Disturb (flop), Rascals (flop), Chashme Baddoor (hit) and Main Tera Hero (semi-hit).
In his latest venture, whether it’s his son Varun’s charisma or Salman Khan’s guest appearance that is drawing hordes of fans to the cinemas is a matter of conjecture but what is beyond doubt is the fact that the senior Dhawan still has the touch to make the box office tick.
