Great time-pass

Mahesh Bhatt and Emran Hashmi…sound familiar, eh? Well, they do click, don’t they? It has an ordinary plot with great music, the serial-kisser at work and couple of heart-touching scenes – and everything that you’d expect in such a film. And it’s all there in Gangster.

Daya (Shiney Ahuja) is a gangster who is betrayed by the person he trusted the
most on earth, tried and executed…after he had turned into a new leaf. The story is basically this, of course along with the incidents that lead to this and the after effects.

Set in the beautiful city of Seoul, the plot as a whole is interesting, with the twists and turns at the right places. Simran (Kangna Ranaut), as the gangster Daya’s love interest does an excellent job and the newcomer truly deserves the praise the audience is showering on her. Her character lacks depth, but she has done all that can be done in the space available. Emran Hashmi, well, he’s just as he always is – the lover-boy, but he plays more than just that in the film.

The person playing the gangster, Shiney Ahuja deserves special praise. If you loved him in Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi, you’ll like him in this film as well. He doesn’t have much dialogues and screen time, but he is the one who leaves the biggest impact. You cannot hate him, even though he plays the part of a ruthless killer; such is the power of his acting.

Not much to comment on the music, most of the songs are big hits by now: “Ya Ali”, “Tuhi meri shaan hai”, “Bheeg bheegi”, et all.

James’ rendition with translated lyrics of the song by the late Gautam Chattopadhyay is rocking the charts everywhere. Pritam rightly deserves a special applause for his efforts. What Anurag Basu has to offer is a good time- pass. However, don’t expect too much when you enter the movie theatre and you may come out satisfied that your money hasn’t been wasted after all.
